Dr Mehta’s journey into medicine began with childhood aspirations partly inspired by the medical TV drama ER, where she admired the fast-paced and impactful work of doctors. However, it was her personal experiences that truly solidified her passion for endocrinology. As a teenager, a family member was diagnosed with diabetes, and Dr Mehta witnessed firsthand the challenges her family faced, deepening her commitment to medicine and sparking an enduring interest in the field of endocrinology.
Dr Mehta completed her medical degree (MBChB) at the University of Nairobi followed by extensive training in Internal Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand. She earned her Fellowship of the College of Physicians (FCP SA) and a Master of Medicine (MMed) with a thesis on drug-induced liver injury in patients using anti-tubercular and antiretroviral medication in 2019. She later sub-specialised in Endocrinology, completing a Fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Wits in 2024, with an observership at the University II Federico Hospital in Naples, Italy.
Dr Mehta is passionate about addressing the holistic needs of her patients, particularly in the field of endocrinology, where she specialises in managing diabetes, pituitary and thyroid disorders, obesity, osteoporosis and parathyroid disorders among other conditions. Her personal connection to diabetes care has driven her to approach patients with empathy, dignity, and professionalism, challenging common misconceptions about the disease.
Dr Mehta is also committed to addressing the healthcare needs of the LGBTQ+ community, with an interest in transgender healthcare, an area often overlooked in the medical profession. She believes in offering a safe and supportive environment for all her patients.
She approaches patient care holistically, understanding that endocrinology connects various bodily systems, requiring a thoughtful and detailed approach to solve complex medical puzzles.
Dr Mehta’s career spans both public and private healthcare. While she has spent much of her career in public healthcare where she played an important role in training interns and registrars, she is no stranger to the private sector. Originally from Nairobi, she also has extensive experience in Kenya's healthcare sector.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr Mehta has contributed to the body of research in Medicine, including publications on the prevalence of diabetes and the association with adverse health outcomes among patients presenting with COVID-19 among others. Her academic achievements are a testament to her commitment to advancing knowledge in endocrinology and medicine.
Outside of work, Dr Mehta is a fitness enthusiast who enjoys going to the gym, running, and listening to music as ways to unwind and stay balanced.
